The Importance of the Role of GRIs in Sharing S&T Resources (2012)

Creative R&DB for the Inclusive and Sustainable Development of the Global Community (2013)

New Vision for Global R&DB (2014)

Science, Technology & Innovation (STI) for a Better Life (2016)

Critical Role of Innovation Clusters: Addressing Policy Issues and Challenges for Inclusive Growth (2019)

Research Paradigm Shift for the World after COVID-19 (2021)

The COVID-19 pandemic, which has persisted for over two years now, triggered a shift in the science and technology paradigm due to the acceleration of Digital Transformation. Industries and S&T agencies around the globe have been focusing their efforts on Digital Transformation, pursuing a vision of the world completely different from the one we knew before COVID-19. And at the forefront will be AI, playing a leading role in bringing about this change.

For 2022, the Seoul S&T Forum will explore the future of S&T shaped by AI, under the theme of “AI’s Role in the Future Transformation of Science and Technology.” This year’s Forum will provide domestic policymakers, researchers, and international specialists with an opportunity to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and discuss future strategies for advancing scientific research in the post-COVID era.

Session I. Balancing Opportunities and Challenges: In the Era of Artificial Intelligence

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) comes to affect our daily lives more and more, there are growing concerns about the forthcoming impact of AI on our industries and jobs, along with the ethical issues it will pose. At the same time, there are also increasingly optimistic expectations that AI can contribute to a better quality of life for all people. Given the coexistence of both expectations and concerns about the future that AI will bring, Session I aims to find a balance between opportunities and threats in the era of AI, through in-depth presentations and a panel discussion on major issues surrounding AI in the areas of business, labor, and ethics.
Firstly, to better visualize how AI can improve the business sector, case studies on the ways that Hyperscale AI can be applied to business as well as the impact it would have will be presented. Secondly, on the subject of labor, AI applications in industries which are poised to face job replacement and reduction will be explored, and future scenarios and policy alternatives for coexistence with AI will also be put forward. Thirdly, with regards to ethical issues, research achievements in assessing trustworthy AI systems in practice will be shared. And to conclude the session, an in-depth panel discussion covering all three aforementioned topics will be held.

Tentative topics include:

How Hyperscale AI Works for NAVER?

AI and Future Job and Labor Issues

How to Assess Trustworthy AI in Practice

Session II. AI & the New Sciences

Session 2 aims to assess the role of AI in terms of R&D and will feature discussions on the past, present, and future achievements of S&T shaped by AI. In this session, each of the three participants will speak on a topic related to AI, reviewing the outcomes obtained using AI in R&D and discussing the potential impact of AI advances on various industries and our lives. The future direction of AI R&D will be also examined.
Firstly, the successful outcomes and technical breakthroughs using AI technology in various R&D fields will be presented, and the potential impact of the development and future direction of AI, along with its challenges and risks, will be also shared. Secondly, AI's rapid development in the field of materials science and engineering will be detailed, including AI research trends, case studies related to AI in materials science & engineering, and future development directions for AI. Thirdly, as we enter the era of precision medicine and the importance of AI and smart health technology increases, a presentation on several innovative health technologies related to AI will be given. And to conclude the session, an in-depth panel discussion covering all three aforementioned topics will be held.Tentative topics include:
